What is Paycheck Tax?
Paycheck tax is the collective term for the taxes withheld from the wages (paycheck) a worker receives in the United States. It is broadly divided into Federal Income Tax and FICA (Social Security and Medicare taxes), with state income tax added depending on the state.
This calculator subtracts the standard deduction from your annual salary (pre-tax gross pay) to get taxable income, applies the 7-bracket progressive rates to determine federal income tax, and charges FICA on the full wage to compute your take-home pay. By switching the pay frequency between annual, monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly, you can see the amount you actually receive each pay period and your effective tax rate, which is useful for comparing real income during salary negotiations or a job change.
Calculation Formula
Taxable Income = Salary − Standard Deduction, Federal Income Tax = Σ(Taxable Amount per Bracket × Bracket Rate), FICA = Social Security (6.2%, $168,600 cap) + Medicare (1.45%), Take-Home Pay = Salary − (Federal Income Tax + FICA)
Example — Single, salary $75,000: Taxable income = 75,000 − 14,600 = $60,400. Federal income tax = 11,600×10% + 35,550×12% + 13,250×22% = $8,341. FICA = 4,650 + 1,087.50. Take-home pay = 75,000 − 14,078.50 = $60,921.50, effective tax rate 18.77%.
