What is a tip?

A tip (or gratuity) is money given to staff who provide a service at restaurants, cafes, taxis, hotels and similar places, on top of the price of the food or service. In the United States and Canada, a large part of service workers' wages comes from tips, so tipping is effectively expected, and the rate is adjusted based on the quality of service.

The tip is calculated by multiplying the bill by a set percentage (%). At a U.S. restaurant, 15% is standard, 18% reflects good service, and 20% or more rewards excellent service. When dining as a group, the total of the food plus the tip is divided by the number of people to split the bill evenly. Tipping is not common in many countries, but this tool is handy for quickly converting an appropriate tip while traveling abroad.

Calculation Formula

The tip calculator produces the following values.

  • Tip = Bill × Tip rate ÷ 100
  • Total = Bill + Tip
  • Total per person = Total ÷ Number of people
  • Tip per person = Tip ÷ Number of people

Example: For a bill of 50,000, an 18% tip, and 4 people, the tip is 50,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 9,000 and the total is 59,000. The total per person is 59,000 ÷ 4 ≈ 14,750, and the tip per person is 2,250.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip on average?
At a U.S. restaurant, 15% is standard, 18% reflects good service, and 20% or more rewards excellent service. In many countries tipping is not a common custom.
Is the tip based on the pre-tax amount?
Tips are generally calculated on the pre-tax (food) amount. However, calculating it on the after-tax total shown on the receipt is also commonly accepted.
Can the tip be split among people?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the total of the food plus tip by the headcount, automatically showing each person's total share and tip amount.
How is the bill split calculated?
Dividing the total (food plus tip) by the number of people dining together gives the amount each person owes. This calculator shows both the per-person total and the per-person tip at once.
Do I have to tip everywhere?
In many places a service charge is included in the price or shown separately, so an additional tip is not always common. Still, at hotels, upscale restaurants and international venues, people often tip according to global norms.
What determines the tip percentage?
By U.S. standards, 15% (standard), 18% (good), and 20% or more (excellent service) are common. For large parties, restaurants sometimes automatically add a service charge (gratuity) of around 18%.
Do I tip at cafes or for takeout?
For counter orders or takeout, tips are often lower, around 10%, or omitted compared with full-service restaurants. Tipping is not mandatory, so you can adjust it based on the type of service.
How are amounts below the smallest unit handled?
This calculator rounds the tip and per-person amounts to the nearest whole unit for display. As a result, the sum of the per-person amounts may differ from the total by one or two units.
