What is weight unit conversion?
Weight (mass) unit conversion means expressing the same amount of weight in different units of measure. Because countries and industries use different units, Korea and Europe mainly rely on kilograms (kg) and grams (g), while the US and UK mainly use pounds (lb) and ounces (oz).
This converter uses the kilogram, the SI base unit for mass, as its pivot: every value is first turned into kg and then converted back into the target unit. That way any combination from milligrams to tons is calculated with consistent precision.
- Cooking and baking: convert oz and lb in foreign recipes into grams
- Logistics and shipping: convert cargo weight into kg and tons
- Traditional trade: convert the geun (斤) used when buying meat or fruit
Calculation Formula
Every unit is unified through the base unit, the kilogram (kg).
result = value × (source factor) / (target factor)
Here a factor is 'the value of 1 of that unit expressed in kg'. e.g. lb = 0.453592, oz = 0.0283495, g = 0.001, geun = 0.6.
Example: 5 pounds to grams
- source factor (lb) = 0.453592, target factor (g) = 0.001
- result = 5 × 0.453592 / 0.001 = 2,267.96 g
