What Is Area Unit Conversion?
Area conversion is the process of expressing the same amount of surface in different measurement units. Because area is fundamentally 'length squared,' doubling a linear unit makes the area factor four times larger, which is exactly why these conversions are tricky to do by intuition alone.
Units are easily mixed in everyday use: residential property in the United States is often quoted in square feet, farmland and large parcels in acres, and most of the rest of the world relies on square meters and hectares. Comparing listings across regions almost always requires a conversion step.
This converter handles 9 units, from mm² up to km², along with ft², yd², acre, hectare, and the East Asian pyeong unit, all referenced to m² as the base for two-way conversion. Use it to compare apartment floor areas, review overseas property listings, and verify land or construction figures.
Calculation Formula
Every unit is first converted into the base unit, square meters (m²), and then divided into the target unit, a two-step approach.
Result = value × (source factor) ÷ (target factor)
Each factor is the 'value in m²' for that unit (acre = 4046.86, hectare = 10000, ft² = 0.092903).
Example) 1 acre → m²1 × 4046.86 ÷ 1 = 4046.86 m²
Example) 1 hectare → acre1 × 10000 ÷ 4046.86 = 2.471052 acres
Results are rounded to 6 decimal places.
