What is age? International, year-based, and counting age

Age is the amount of time, expressed in years, that has passed from birth to a given reference date. For the same person, the number shown can differ depending on the counting method, which is why three different age systems have traditionally been used in Korea.

Three types of age

  • International age: The global standard, where you gain one year on each birthday. The day you are born, you are 0 years old.
  • Year-based age: The current year minus the birth year. It is used as the standard in some laws, such as those on military service and youth protection.
  • Counting age: The traditional method, where you are 1 at birth and gain a year every January 1.

With the Unified Age Act that took effect on June 28, 2023, age in administrative, legal, and contractual contexts has been standardized to international age. This calculator shows international age by default and provides year-based and counting age for reference.

Calculation formula

International age depends on whether your birthday has passed.

International age = (reference year - birth year) - (1 if birthday not yet passed, 0 if passed)

Example: As of June 3, 2026, someone born September 20, 1998 has not yet reached this year's birthday (9/20), so (2026 - 1998) - 1 = 27 years.

  • Year-based age = reference year - birth year = 2026 - 1998 = 28
  • Counting age = (reference year - birth year) + 1 = 29
  • Zodiac = birth year % 12 mapped to the 12 animals (1998 % 12 = 2 -> Tiger)
  • D-day = next birthday date - reference date (in days)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do international age and counting age differ?
International age treats the day of birth as 0 and adds a year on each birthday; this is the global standard. Counting age makes you 1 at birth and adds a year every January 1, so it is usually 1 to 2 years higher than international age.
How exactly is international age calculated?
Subtract the birth year from the reference year, then subtract one more if this year's birthday has not yet passed, or leave it as is if it has. So it is (this year - birth year - 1) or (this year - birth year). Since June 28, 2023, all legal ages in Korea have been unified to international age.
Why was Korean (counting) age abolished?
On June 28, 2023, the 'Unified Age Act' took effect, so legal and administrative matters now use only international age. Counting age differed from the global standard and caused confusion in medical care, contracts, and more, so this calculator shows it for reference only.
How is the zodiac (12 animals) calculated?
The zodiac is determined by the remainder when the birth year is divided by 12. The order is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. For example, someone born in 2000 is a Dragon, and someone born in 1996 is a Rat.
How is age calculated for those born on February 29 (a leap day)?
For people born on a leap day (February 29), the law treats March 1 as their birthday in common years (under civil law). This calculator also sets the next birthday to March 1 in common years when computing the D-day, and it has no effect on the years, months, and days of international age.
How are the total months and total days alive calculated?
Total months = (years of international age x 12) + months of international age. For example, 26 years and 3 months is 315 months. Total days alive is the day difference between the date of birth and the reference date, useful for infant development records or anniversary calculations.
Can I also calculate the age difference between two dates?
Yes. Enter a date of birth and a reference date, and you can see the exact age between the two dates in years, months, and days. If you leave the reference date blank, today's date is applied automatically.
