What is a business day?

A business day (working day) is a weekday on which work actually takes place, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. It usually runs Monday through Friday and is distinct from a calendar day.

Bank transfer processing, government replies, courier delivery promises, contractual notice periods, and refund windows are mostly stated 'in business days.' For example, 'processed within 3 business days' means three weekdays after skipping weekends and holidays, so a request made on Friday will actually be completed the following week.

This calculator counts the business days between two dates, or adds N business days to a given date, helping you predict deadlines and arrival dates precisely.

Calculation formula

Business days within a period are found as follows (both start and end dates inclusive).

Business days = Total days − Weekend days − Weekday holiday days

For example, from Friday, May 1, 2026 to Friday, May 8, 2026, out of 8 total days the weekend covers 5/2 (Sat) and 5/3 (Sun), or 2 days, and Children's Day on 5/5 (Tue) is a 1-day weekday holiday. Therefore 8 − 2 − 1 = 5 business days. In 'add business days' mode, the calculator advances one day at a time from the day after the start, skipping weekends and holidays and increasing the count by 1 each time it lands on a weekday, returning the date on which the target number of business days is reached.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a business day?
A business day is a weekday excluding Saturday and Sunday, typically Monday through Friday. By additionally excluding public holidays, you can count only the days on which work actually takes place. Banks, government offices, and companies often state processing deadlines 'in business days.'
How are weekends handled in business day calculations?
Saturdays and Sundays are excluded from business days by default. The calculator determines the day of the week, classifies Saturday (6) and Sunday (0) as weekend days, and subtracts them from the business day total.
Are public holidays excluded automatically?
When the exclude-holidays option is on, the 2026 South Korean public holidays (New Year's Day, the Lunar New Year holidays, Independence Movement Day and its substitute holiday, Children's Day, Buddha's Birthday, Memorial Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day, the Chuseok holidays, Hangeul Day, and Christmas) are excluded automatically. Company anniversaries and temporary holidays designated later are not included.
Can I find the number of business days between two dates?
Yes. In 'count business days within a period' mode, enter a start date and an end date to calculate the business days between them. Note that both the start and end dates are counted inclusively.
Do 'business day' and 'working day' mean the same thing?
The two terms are generally used interchangeably, both referring to weekdays excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. However, 24-hour operations or stores open on weekends may use their own definition, and in legal or administrative contexts 'business day' is the more formal expression.
Can I find the date that falls a certain number of days after a given date?
In 'add business days to a start date' mode, enter the start date and the number of business days to add, and the result date is calculated. Counting only weekdays from the day after the start while skipping weekends and holidays, you can precisely find a shipping estimate like 'arrives in 5 business days' or a contractual notice expiry.
How does the calculation work if I turn off the exclude-holidays option?
With holiday exclusion off, only weekends (Sat/Sun) are excluded and all weekdays count as business days. This suits businesses that operate normally on holidays, or a simple weekday count where holidays are not considered separately.
Are holidays that fall on a weekend subtracted separately?
No. A holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday is already excluded as a weekend day, so it is not double-counted in the holiday total. The calculator first determines whether a day is a weekend, then excludes holidays only among the non-weekend weekdays.
