What is a business day?
A business day (working day) is a weekday on which work actually takes place, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. It usually runs Monday through Friday and is distinct from a calendar day.
Bank transfer processing, government replies, courier delivery promises, contractual notice periods, and refund windows are mostly stated 'in business days.' For example, 'processed within 3 business days' means three weekdays after skipping weekends and holidays, so a request made on Friday will actually be completed the following week.
This calculator counts the business days between two dates, or adds N business days to a given date, helping you predict deadlines and arrival dates precisely.
Calculation formula
Business days within a period are found as follows (both start and end dates inclusive).
Business days = Total days − Weekend days − Weekday holiday days
For example, from Friday, May 1, 2026 to Friday, May 8, 2026, out of 8 total days the weekend covers 5/2 (Sat) and 5/3 (Sun), or 2 days, and Children's Day on 5/5 (Tue) is a 1-day weekday holiday. Therefore 8 − 2 − 1 = 5 business days. In 'add business days' mode, the calculator advances one day at a time from the day after the start, skipping weekends and holidays and increasing the count by 1 each time it lands on a weekday, returning the date on which the target number of business days is reached.
